Because of a lack of experience, the bookkeeper for the corporation made the following entry for the repair cost each year after depreciation was recorded.

Dr. Accumulated Depreciation Cr. Cash

As a result, when item A was sold in July 2012 for $25,000, the bookkeeper recorded a loss on the sale. Also, when item B was sold in September 2013 for $40,000, the bookkeeper also recorded a loss. (Assume the bookkeeper ignored the debits to Accumulated Depreciation in computing annual depreciation expense on each asset.)

b.What entry should have been made for each sale?

Exercise 5.2. With respect to each of the following plant asset expenditures, indicate whether the item should be expensed or capitalized. Also, indicate whether the item is best classified as: (1) an addition, (2) an improvement,

During January 2013, the company spent another $8,000 for additional developmental work that increased the estimated productive capacity of the mineral deposit.

Required:

Compute the acquisition cost of the deposit in 2012, depletion for 2012, and net book value of the deposit after payment of the January 2013 developmental costs.

During January of this year, on the basis of a careful study, management decided that the total estimated useful life should be changed to 25 years (instead of 30) and the residual value reduced to $23,000 (from $30,000). The depreciation method will not change.

Required:

Compute the annual depreciation expense prior to the change in estimates, the annual depreciation expense after the change in estimates. Give necessary journal entries.
