Indignation: Disturbance of the Sign. On the Performative, Slogans and Lenin

Abstract: The article introduces a strictly physical dimension in the interpretation of social protests. Among other things, it resorts to the Deleuzian notion of mot d'ordre that stands for both “slogan” and “command”. Deleuze describes the incorporeal transformati ons that the mot d'ordre produces. They are the realization of the speech act (action) within a statement. These transformations embrace whole social groups. The sentiment of the latter might be accounted for by the “structures of feeling” (R. Williams) th at describe nothing other than the changing states of things. Such “structures” depersonalize sentiment, at the same time paying tribute to shared desires, anxieties and hopes that disclose a turbulent collective in the making. Any disturbance displaces the sign as we know it, therefore a dynamic model of the sign has to be developed if we wish to remain faithful to the affective dimension of social discontent. The concept of affect is examined in connection with the “strong” slogans of the Civil War as well as the “weak” slogans of the 2011-2013 protest movement in Russia.
