Анализ учебных программ выявил обеспокоенность интеллектуалов и интеллектуалок тем, что мужчины и женщины должны читать правильные, рекомендуемые книги и изучать предметы в соответствии с их гендером. Существовали значительные различия в культурных идеях, заложенных в учебных планах, но неизменно в них присутствовало и что-то общее. Например, книги по истории можно найти в списках рекомендаций для обоих полов, в изучении языков мальчикам рекомендовали изучение классических языков - греческого и латыни, тогда как в обучении девочек делали акцент на современные иностранные языки, например итальянский и французский. Классические произведения обычно предлагались для изучения девочкам уже в переводе. Чтение религиозной литературы также было необходимой частью образования, как для мальчиков, так и для девочек, но авторы советов рекомендовали девочкам избегать противоречивых теологических учений. Романы и публичные библиотеки многие авторы считали развращающими юные души. Натурфилософия считалась более подходящей для мальчиков, нежели для девочек, хотя некоторые произведения, такие как работа Уильяма Дерема, были рекомендованы обоим полам. Также полагали вполне подходящими для юных леди и такие современные науки, как ботаника. Между тем, по мнению многих авторов, глубокая философия и математика были слишком сложными для девушек.
Несмотря на то что в английском обществе активно формировалось мнение, что удел женщины - это дом и семья, ее долг и предназначение - посвятить себя им, новые учебные планы демонстрируют важность качества женского образования, позволяющего женщине стать равным мужчине интеллектуальным партнером в браке. Чтение становится одним из активных женских занятий. Во второй половине XVIII века владение книгой стало своеобразным маркером социальных притязаний и интеллектуальных достижений. Книги выступали как элемент культурного кода, по ним можно было определить социальный, интеллектуальный или нравственный статус читательницы.
Так, революция чтения оказала влияние на формирование набора компетенций английской леди: знание иностранных языков, литературы, истории, географии, арифметики, Закона Божия, наряду с умением танцевать, музицировать, рисовать и пр., что способствовало эмансипации ее сознания. Однако целью приобретения этих навыков все так же оставался выгодный респектабельный брак. Именно этому утилитарному подходу к оценке назначения женщины в обществе противостояли М. Уолстонкрафт, К. Маколей, Э. Дарвин и многие другие авторы образовательных текстов эпохи.
