          Учитель не раскрывает правильного ответа, даже если он уже назван, пока не дойдет до последней ассоциации в блоке, когда ответ очевиден. Затем уже называет того, кто первым угадал правильный ответ. Цель такого приема - учащиеся припоминают достаточно много названий профессий, потому что первое и второе слово (словосочетание) в блоке ассоциаций предполагают достаточно широкий круг занятий.

Этап тренировки начинается с дифференцировочных упражнений. Задачи этапа дифференцировки - выявить особенности формы, значения и употребления слова. Работа над формой слова может включать следующие упражнения:

. Выбрать из списка профессий те, чтение которых необходимо просто запомнить, так как оно не соответствует установленным в языке правилам (список профессий - см. Приложение А).

. Сгруппировать слова из того же списка согласно ударения:

а) слова с ударением на 1 слоге

б) слова с ударением на 2 слоге

в) слова с ударением на 3 слоге

г) слова с ударением на 4 слоге

. Ознакомить учащихся с основными различиями в графической форме слов с русском и английском языках (более подробно - см. раздел 2.3 с. 28), а затем предложить выбрать из списка профессий (Приложение Б) те интернациональные слова, в которых английское ph соответствует русскому ф, английское c - русскому к, английское c - русскому ц, английское j - русскому дж, английское y - русскому и. Упражнение способствует увеличению потенциального словарного запаса, формирует навыки распознавания интернациональных слов.

. Вставить в слова недостающие буквы:

brickl - - er, j - - rnalist, ac - - untant, ar - - itect, me - - anic, surg - - n, l - w - er, musi - - an, desi - - er, car - - r.

Умение дифференцировать слова на уровне словообразования необходимо для развития языковой догадки. Здесь работа направлена на осознание как формальных, так и семантических особенностей лексики:

. Учитель дает задание вспомнить названия профессий на -er, на -or, на -ist, на -an; не содержащие указанных элементов (например, chef, judge etc). Учащиеся записывают слова в тетрадках, затем проводится проверка в форме конкурса - класс разделяется на три команды, каждая команда произносит по одному слову данного типа. Та команда, на которой заканчивается перечисление, - проигравшая. Если в процессе игры приводятся слова, относящиеся к "ложным друзьям переводчика" (artist, compositor, conductor и так далее) - дается объяснение их значения.

2. Why are these professions called in such a way?

electrician, accountant, lawyer, bricklayer, lecturer, scientist, designer, librarian

Учащиеся должны указать, что названия профессий могут быть связаны с действием, которое выполняет представитель профессии (accountant, bricklayer, designer), с местом работы (librarian) и так далее.

Усложненный вариант подобного задания - объяснить, почему "ложные друзья переводчика" artist, compositor, conductor имеют в английском языке значения, не соответствующие русским. Такое задание допустимо только на старшем этапе обучения, так как требует развитых аналитических способностей, умения сравнивать явления в иностранном и родном языке. Учащиеся должны указать, что русские и английские значения слов artist (артист), compositor (композитор), conductor (кондуктор) образовались от различных значений исходных слов art, compose, conduct.

. Для развития языковой догадки можно предложить определить значения незнакомых слов, образованных от известных лексических единиц:

Find compound words in the text. Which of them can you understand? Explain.

Используя языковую и контекстуальную догадку, можно определить значение следующих сложных слов:

Как уже упоминалось, развитие потенциального словаря связано не с запоминанием слов, а с усвоением приемов распознавания мотивированных и интернациональных единиц, с совершенствованием механизмов языковой и контекстуальной догадки.

Языковая догадка связана не только со словообразовательной структурой слова, но и с распознаванием значений многозначного слова. Одной из основных задач соответствующей тренировки должно быть выявление существенных и закономерных способов переосмысления значения слова.

Перед выполнением следующего упражнения целесообразно дать краткие сведения об основных типах изменения семантики слова - сужении значения (specialization), расширении значения (generalization), метафоре (metaphor), метонимии (metonymy).

trade - 1) 'занятие, ремесло, профессия'; 2) 'закономерность, привычка, обычный ход событий' (generalization)

reduce - 1) 'ослаблять, понижать'; 2) 'понижать в должности' (specialization)

discharge - 1) 'разгружать'; 2) 'увольнять' (metaphor)

В следующем задании с целью развития языковой и контекстуальной догадки предлагается найти в тексте слова, которые употреблены метафорически, в переносном смысле:

Для развития навыков правильного распознавания слов в рецептивных видах деятельности плодотворной может быть работа со словами, близкими по звучанию, но совершенно различными по значению (паронимами).

Обратить внимание на паронимию среди существительных, связанных с темой "My future profession", научиться различать паронимы в тексте поможет следующее упражнение:
