Если же паломничество к святыне совершалось в реальности, то дело происходило втайне, под покровом ночи. Например, в Йорке (втором по численности населения и количеству казней католиков городе страны) католики ночами отправлялись в паломничество к местному «Тайберну» в предместье Найвсмир и украшали виселицу цветами, причем это происходило не перед казнью и было связано не с предстоящим мученичеством, а с почитанием самого места Mush J. Ночное паломничество, скрытое от глаз не-католиков, позволяло верующим проявить свои чувства, преклонив колени в молитве. К сожалению, таких описаний сохранилось очень мало, что и неудивительно, ведь речь идет о тайной практике.
Другим вариантом было совершение паломничества днем: католики могли пройти мимо виселицы или проехать в карете, мысленно совершая молитву. Но такие ситуации исключали внешние жесты: паломничество не должно было выглядеть таковым. Известны случаи, когда католики устраивали пасхальный крестный ход в Лондоне. Группа католиков обошла по улицам квартал вокруг одного из судебных иннов (Грейз-инн): процессию составили несколько человек вместе со священником. Все они были одеты в обычную одежду и не несли с собой крестов и хоругвей [McClain 2004, p. 142-143]. Следовательно, крестный ход являлся таковым лишь для самих участников. Имели место также и процессии, когда участники (католики-аристократы и/или иностранцы оставались в каретах и проезжали по улицам Лондона: такой, например, была процессия по случаю освобождения из тюрьмы уже упоминавшейся Луисы де Карвахаль в 1614 г. [Redworth 2008, p. 261, Серегина 2014, с. 77-78]. Никто не мог помешать лондонским католикам совершать именно такие паломничества в Тайберн, но различные упоминания о присутствии католиков рядом с этим местом сложно интерпретировать однозначно, так как публичные действия ими не совершались. Католикам было достаточно молиться рядом. Таким образом, паломничества к местам казней, и в частности к Тайберну, в XVII в. оказывались «невидимой практикой». Необходимость приспособиться к существованию в окружении протестантов породило скупую на жесты и внешне сдержанную религиозную культуру английского католического сообщества раннего Нового времени.
Однако отсутствие описаний паломничеств может быть и результатом сознательной политики католического духовенства. Священники - а именно они чаще всего оказывались авторами свидетельств о мученичестве и повествований о новых святых - редактировали описания благочестивых практик в соответствии с тем, что считали допустимым и желательным для своей паствы. Конечно, в реальной жизни миссионеры полностью зависели от католиков-мирян, укрывавших их в своих домах и финансировавших работу миссии, семинарий и английских монастырей в изгнании, и не располагали рычагами контроля над действиями своих единоверцев в Англии. Английские паломничества XVII в. не контролировались католическим духовенством и не вписывались в идеальную модель пост-Тридентских паломнических практик. По всей видимости, именно поэтому они исчезли со страниц католических текстов, а позднее - и академических изданий. Так отсутствие контроля над социальной практикой компенсировалось контролем над исторической памятью.
