Much и many в качестве местоимений-существительных употребляются со значением: much многое, значительная часть, many многие. После much и many в этом случае часто употребляется предлог of:

Much и many употребляются главным образом в вопросительных и отрицательных предложениях:

В утвердительных предложениях much и many употребляются в тех случаях, когда они определяются словами very, rather, too, so, as, how или когда они служат подлежащим или определением к подлежащему:

В других случаях в утвердительных предложениях вместо much

употребляются a lot (of), lots (of), plenty (of), a good deal (of), a great deal (of). Вместо many употребляются a lot (of), lots (of), plenty (of), a great many, a good many:

Russia exports a great deal of timber. Россия экспортирует много леса.

We have plenty of time.

У нас много времени.

We saw a lot of people there.

Мы видели там много народу.

Much может также употребляться в роли наречия :

Не does not read very much.

Он читает не очень много.

Местоимения little и few

Little и few употребляются со значением мало. Little употребляется перед неисчисляемыми существительными, местоимение few – перед исчисляемыми

существительными:

 

I have very little time.

У меня очень мало времени.

Не has few friends.

У него мало друзей.

There were very few people there. Там было очень мало народу.

В утвердительных предложениях little и few часто заменяются not much и not many в тех случаях, когда они не определяются одним из слов very, rather, too,

so, as, how:

 

I haven't got much time (вместо:

У меня мало времени.

I’ve got little time).

 

There aren't many French books in

В нашей библиотеке мало французских

our library (вместо: There are few

книг.

French books in our library).

 

Little употребляется также в качестве прилагательного со значением

маленький, небольшой и наречия со значением мало :

I want the little box, not the big

Мне нужна маленькая коробка, а

one (прилагательное).

не большая.

You rest too little (наречие).

Вы отдыхаете слишком мало.

Little в качестве местоимения-существительного употребляется со значением мало, немногое, а местоимение few – со значением немногие:

Little has been said about it. Об этом сказано мало.

Many people were invited but Много народу было приглашено, few came. но немногие пришли.

Little и few могут употребляться с неопределённым артиклем — a little

(немного) и a few (немного, несколько):

Please give me a little water. Дайте мне, пожалуйста, немного воды.

I have a few books on this subject. У меня есть несколько (немного) книг по этому вопросу.

A little немного и a few немного, несколько употребляются в смысле некоторое, хотя и небольшое количество, в то время как little и few мало употребляются в смысле недостаточно, почти нет:

Местоимение all

Местоимение all употребляется как в качестве местоименияприлагательного, так и местоимения-существительного.

1. В качестве местоимения-прилагательного all употребляется со значением все с исчисляемыми существительными во множественном числе и со значением весь, вся, всё с неисчисляемыми существительными. Артикль the, притяжательные и указательные местоимения ставятся после all:

All the students have passed the

Все студенты выдержали экзамен.

Перед исчисляемыми существительными в единственном числе вместо all обычно употребляется the whole:

Со словами morning, day, night и другими обозначениями времени употребляется как all, так и the whole. All (the) morning, the whole morning; all (the) day, the whole day и т. д.
