Abstract. The article covers the features of the 1960–70s student protest movement in Great Britain. The aim of the article is to identify the reasons of the appearance of the mass student protest movement in Great Britain in the second half of the 1960s, to classify the main reasons of the student protests, and to find out the features of the student protest move- ment in Britain in comparison with the student protest movement in continental Western Europe and the USA.
The data of the research was collected from different modern scientific
works devoted to the 1960–70s youth protest in Great Britain, the USA and Western Europe. Furthermore, British law acts and the materials of British press were used. There are external and domestic reasons of the mass student protest movement of the 1960–70s. The domestic reasons are the social and the economic policy of Clement Attlee’s government that created a «welfare state» in the UK. The next reason is the growing number of universities that increased the number of students from 82 thousand in 1954–1955 to 235 thousand in 1970–1971. Also in the 1960s the UK became more liberal than ever before. The abortion became legal, the divorce became more accessible, in England and Wales the age of adulthood was lowered to 18. All people of the United Kingdom got the right to vote at the age of 18. All these factors caused the growth of life expectations of the young people. The external reasons of the mass student protest movement are the Cold War and especially the Vietnam War and the left-wing ideologies.
According to E.S. Hanna’s research, the most frequent occasions of the student protests were the questions of domestic character, such as the increasing of hostel fee, the quality of food at university cafeterias, and the protests against specific individuals. Most of the reasons were politicized, except the questions of the domestic character. Students protested against the Vietnam War and organized actions in support of foreign students. In contrast with the USA, France and West Germany, there were no nationwide problems in the UK, which worried the youth, despite the aggravation of the Ulster conflict. The main forms of the student protest in Great Britain were sit -in and teach-in. It was typical not only for Great Britain, but also for the USA, France, Italy and West Germany.
Therefore, the British student protest was narrowly focused, except anti-war demonstrations. It was intended to solve a particular problem in a particular educational institution. The British student movement of the 1960–70s cannot be called homogeneous. However, despite this fact it had a serious impact on the transformation of the British higher education system. The influence of the student unions had grown and the educational programs were reformed. At the end of the 1960s in many universities students' representatives were admitted to senates and faculty councils where they could represent the
interest of students.
